This film honors the many contributions Italian-Americans have made to this nation, and indeed to the world. For the Documentary Chanel in 2008 and 2009 Amoruso, wrote, directed & edited the critically-acclaimed specials NEW YORK NOIR: THE HISTORY OF BLACK NEW YORK, LA COSA NOSTRA: THE HISTORY OF THE NEW YORK MAFIA, ELVIS PRESLEY: FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END, ROCKY MARCIANO: A LIFE STORY and ELVIS PRESLEY: A GENEROUS HEART, which George Klein, Elvis’ lifelong friend, called “the best and most moving film ever done on Elvis.” Between 2004 and 2006, for the PBS Network, Amoruso wrote and directed and edited three critically-acclaimed national specials: FRANK SINATRA: THE MAN & THE MYTH, DEAN MARTIN: THE ONE & ONLY and SAMMY DAVIS, Jr.: ONE COOL CAT. In 2006 Amoruso produced, directed and edited the VH-1 music special BACK IN THE DAY: LIVE FROM HURRAH, a retrospective of the “New Wave” sound of the early 1980s. Featured are performances by THE GO-GO’s, THE FLESHTONES, LENE LOVICH and many more. It is a Warner Brothers release on DVD.
In 2006 Amoruso produced and edited the DVD collection THE BEST OF SOUPY SALES. This collection features over three hours of the best comedy routines done by TV legend Soupy Sales from his classic TV show. It was released in early 2006 to rave reviews and became an immediate bestseller in retail and on Amazon.
Between 2003 and 2005 Amoruso edited 23 made-for-television movies for the LIFETIME NETWORK, and also edited 10 episodes of BATTLESHIP GALACTICA for the SCI-FI CHANNEL. In the summer 2005 Amoruso produced & edited the Catholic Network special presentation of POPE JOHN PAUL II: IN HIS OWN WORDS. Featured as special guests in this film are JAMES EARL JONES, MATTHEW MODINE, BROOKE SHIELDS, EDWARD JAMES OLMOS, FAITH HILL, TIM McGRAW, STEVEN TYLER, DENNIS FRANZ and JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT.
In 2004 Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the YES NETWORK’s special presentation of HOLLYWOOD PINSTRIPES, a film about the history of the New York Yankees in movies and on television. Special guests include KEVIN COSTNER, BILLY CRYSTAL, ROBERT WUHL, DEREK
JETER, BERNIE WILLIAMS, JOE TORRE, ROGER CLEMENS, TERESA WRIGHT and many more. This film was nominated for two EMMY AWARDS including Best Documentary and Best Documentary segment.
In 2002 Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the 90 minute special DYNASTY, THE NEW YORK YANKEES for Fox Sports and Metro Sports. Narrated by ROBERT KLEIN, special guests in this film include PHIL RIZZUTO, WHITEY FORD, YOGI BERRA, ROBERT LOGGIA, TOM LASORDA, CHRIS CHAMBLISS and WILLIE RANDOLPH to name just a few. DYNASTY won two World Gold Medals - for Best Script and Best Narration - at the 2001 New York Film & TV Festivals. It was also nominated for a New York Spirit Award. In 2000, Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the PBS/Metro Sports 90 minute specials WILLIE MAYS: IN HIS OWN WORDS and GIL HODGES: THE QUIET MAN (based upon Amoruso's critically-acclaimed book about this beloved baseball legend.) These films feature special guests WILLIE McCOVEY, TOM SEAVER, ORLANDO CEPEDA, RALPH BRANCA, TUG McGRAW, YOGI BERRA and many others.
In March of 2000, Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the critically acclaimed national PBS special presentation of DEM BUMS: THE BROOKLYN DODGERS. Special guests in this film include ROY CAMPANELLA, DUKE SNIDER, DON NEWCOMBE, WILLIE MAYS, DON DRYSDALE, CARL ERSKINE, RALPH BRANCA and YOGI BERRA. It was narrated by DAVID HARTMAN.
In 1999, Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the MSG/Metro Sports special presentation of THE GREATEST SEASON, THE 1969 WORLD CHAMPION NEW YORK METS. This is the definitive film about that memorable and historic season, and features special guests TOM SEAVER, JERRY KOOSMAN, DONN CLENDENON, BUD HARRELSON, CLEON JONES, RON SWOBODA, TOMMIE AGEE and many other members of the 1969 Miracle Mets.
In late 1999 Amoruso completed the critically acclaimed theatrical feature documentary KAZ: RUNNING DOWN A DREAM. Amoruso was Co-Producer and editor on this film. This film tells the remarkable and moving story of young Nicole Kaczmarski, a female basketball phenom, and the most highly recruited female player in history. Shot over a three year period on locations around the world, KAZ premiered to outstanding reviews at the New York Film Festival and has been broadcast on numerous national and regional sports networks.
In 1998 Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the 13 part series CINEMA LEGENDS. This series, syndicated internationally by Liberation Entertainment, features 30 minute biographies on legendary Hollywood stars such as SHIRLEY TEMPLE, JIMMY STEWART, CARY GRANT and FRANK SINATRA to name just a few.
Between 1998 and 2005 Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the 30 part weekly baseball series AMERICA'S GAME, AMERICA'S HEROES for The Madison Square Garden Network. Each half hour show highlights and examines a great player or legendary team in baseball history. This series ran for six years on MSG. It currently runs weekly on SportsNet, New York.
In 1999 Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the two-hour national PBS Special, G.I. JOE: THE ERNIE PYLE STORY - a moving, dramatic and powerful show based on the writings of the legendary and beloved World War II correspondent, Ernie Pyle. Special Guests in the film include PRESIDENT GERALD FORD, WALTER CRONKITE, ANDY ROONEY, CHARLES KURALT, JAMES WHITMORE, WILLIAM WINDOM and HARRY CAREY, JR. Steven Spielberg called G.I. JOE, THE ERNIE PYLE STORY "flawless filmmaking", and Tom Hanks said: "It is the finest documentary film ever done about the true heroes of World War II, the common soldiers."
Between 1993 and 1998, Amoruso wrote, produced, directed and edited a number of national television specials. In 1997 he wrote, produced, directed and edited the two hour Encore Western special WAR IN LINCOLN COUNTY, the definitive show about the most infamous and legendary range war in the history of the American West. In 1996 Amoruso wrote, directed and edited the one-hour TV special HOCKEY HAVOC (MSG) starring the legendary HANSON BROTHERS, who starred opposite PAUL NEWMAN in the comedy classic "SLAP SHOT." Also, during this period, Amoruso wrote, produced, directed & edited original programming for other national networks including BRAVO, RKO TELEVISION, MTV and TNN.
In 1992 Amoruso wrote, produced & directed the award-winning two-hour television docudrama LEGENDS OF THE AMERICAN WEST. Shot on location in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Missouri, Kansas, Arizona, Oklahoma and California, LEGENDS starred BEN JOHNSON and HARRY CAREY, JR., with original music by country music superstar CHARLIE DANIELS. This film tells the true and factual stories of many of the historical people and events of the Old West. This is done through the use of archival photos, film clips, classic western art and, most importantly, spectacular dramatic re-enactments. LEGENDS was nominated for a number of awards, and went on to win the prestigious WESTERN HERITAGE AWARD (an award won in other years by LONESOME DOVE, DANCES WITH WOLVES and THE UNFORGIVEN.) LEGENDS aired nationally on the ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK & THE HISTORY CHANNEL, and is currently airing nationally on the Encore Western Channel.
In 1991 Amoruso wrote & directed the enormously popular PBS special presentation, OF MOOSE & MEN: THE ROCKY & BULLWINKLE STORY. This one-hour retrospective of the classic cartoon series set ratings records at numerous PBS stations across the nation. In addition, it received "rave" reviews in publications such as TIME, NEWSWEEK, PEOPLE and VARIETY to name just a few. What's more, the show's tremendous popularity and record ratings started a television trend of retrospective specials about "baby-boomer" TV shows. In connection with the show's national popularity, Amoruso made a number of TV appearances, including a guest appearance on NBC's TODAY SHOW.
For seven years, between 1984 and 1991, Amoruso was the Senior Producer-Director-Writer for the AMERICAN MOVIE CLASSICS NETWORK. At AMC he wrote, produced and directed the large majority of the network's original programming. With Amoruso as one of the primary creative forces behind AMC from its inception, the network grew from 250,000 subscribers to well over 50 million in a six year period. While at AMC Amoruso wrote, produced and directed literally hundreds of hours of original programming and directed stars such as GREGORY PECK, LAUREN BACALL and JIMMY STEWART in a number of different productions.
In 1989, for AMC, Amoruso wrote, produced and directed the popular and critically acclaimed one-hour special COWBOYS, BEN JOHNSON & HARRY CAREY, JR - a retrospective of the lives and careers of these two beloved western stars. He also wrote, directed & edited 30 minute features about JOHN WAYNE, CARY GRANT, SHIRLEY TEMPLE, GARY COOPER, JIMMY STEWART, CAROLE LOMBARD, DAVID NIVEN, CLARK GABLE and many more classic stars.
In the fall of 1989 Amoruso wrote, produced and directed the critically acclaimed primetime special presentation of JOHN FORD'S AMERICA. This 90 minute special is a tribute to the great director’s vision of America's history, heritage and folklore through his classic films. Hosted by Ford regular HARRY CAREY, JR., guest stars include JIMMY STEWART, BEN JOHNSON, JOANNE DRU and JOHN IRELAND. Shot on location in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico, JOHN FORD'S AMERICA also features never-before-seen home movie footage of stars such as JOHN WAYNE, MAUREEN O'HARA, HENRY FONDA and JOHN FORD himself. This footage was provided to Amoruso by the John Ford Estate. Praised by critics, fans and filmmakers alike, this film is considered by many film historians as the definitive historical work on John Ford. In addition to receiving many "five star" reviews, the film was the subject of a special feature on ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT.
Between 1984 and 1991 Amoruso also wrote & directed many feature presentations for SPORTSCHANNEL (NOW THE FOX SPORTS NET). In 1989 he wrote & directed PRIDE OF THE ISLAND, the history of the New York Islanders Hockey team. In 1990 he wrote and directed the ten-part series THE HALLS OF FAME. Each half hour episode features an in-depth interview with a baseball great, among them, JOHNNY BENCH, ROY CAMPANELLA, DON DRYSDALE, AL KALINE, BROOKS ROBINSON and HARMON KILLEBREW to name just a few. Amoruso also co-wrote or wrote SPORTSCHANNEL features on MICKEY MANTLE, ROGER MARIS and TOM SEAVER.
In addition to writing, directing, producing and editing numerous television features, Amoruso has also written, directed and edited many national television commercials and corporate presentations for companies such as THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY, JORDACHE JEANS, CANON, RANCH 1, SANYO, AGREE SHAMPOO, COORS, MASTERLOCK and many more. He has also authored four books including GIL HODGES: THE QUIET MAN (rated as one of the top five baseball books of 1991 by the USA TODAY), OUR CONTRIBUTIONS: THE ITALIANS IN AMERICA (the companion book to the national PBS Special.), THE ITALIANS: THE NEXT GENERATION, (which was released with the Warner Bros. retrospective album of the same title in September of 2005.) and BEING ITALIAN: A MEMOIR which is scheduled for release in the winter of 2009.
